Fife NHS Board Candidate - Ken Cochran

I am a graduate of the University of St Andrews and live locally.  My son is also a graduate of St Andrews and my daughter currently is a student at St Andrews - I know and appreciate the student life in St Andrews very much.  The university is served by teams of very professional and caring doctors and nurses, a first rate and brand new hospital, and Red Cross volunteers at major functions.

Your time at St Andrews should be invigorating ... stimulating your interests and developing your skills academically, professionally and socially. You shouldn't spend a lot of time worrying about your health, but there are a few simple things you can do to ensure it doesn't become a worry.

My number one tip for you is - "Watch how much you drink" - if you lose control you are much more likely to do something you will later regret or have an accident.  If you do this frequently you may seriously and irreparably damage your liver.  Know your limits and stick to them.  Your friends will respect you even more as a result, and you will enjoy yourself more and remember these happy days better.   Excess drinking is the main cause of accidents and loss of control for students.  Sadly every now and then a student dies in St Andrews and many more find themselves with irreversible health issues due to loss of control.

The last thing you need is for me or anyone else to cramp your style or be judgemental, and if you do need healthcare regardless of the underlying reason, the NHS should be here for you. to provide quick, effective and confidential help.  I will ensure that this is not overlooked by NHS Fife.

I would ask you to vote for me to ensure students at St Andrews are not overlooked by a NHS board which might be heavily weighted with candidates from the west of Fife.

Enjoy your time at St Andrews - these are wonderful years.  P.S. if you are going overseas please be sure to check you get the appropriate vaccinations and health advice for regions you are visiting.
